DRDGold has 41 programmes to take mine communities out of poverty
Published On: February 16, 2022Tags: Mining WeeklySocioTech's work mobilised more than 4000 BBL participants in DRDGOLD's areas of operation, which has provided a foundation for the development of 41 further programmes by the Enterprises unit attached to Pretoria University. In Ekurhuleni, Soweto, and Merafong, it is hoped that families will benefit from additional ways to become economically active in the township economy – where they are, with what they have – even while jobs are so very scarce.

From a small vegetable patch to a self-sustaining business, Anna Kgaretswe is making a living out of her garden in Majakaneng. Through her participation in SocioTech’s Broad-Based Livelihoods (BBL) strategies to stimulate personal economic activity, Anna has acquired agricultural skills and applies this knowledge to create a successful food gardening business.

The BBL starts by enabling people living in poverty to address their most basic need for food and then empowers them with the skills to become economically independent, small business owners.
